Mojave Camping: Day Two

We survived the first night of 30-40 degree temperatures and rather gusty winds. We had a friendly owl hooting all night. No coyotes, no wild animals. I do think a fox was sniffing around outside of our tent at one point, and some other campers saw some foxes that night. It was cold for sleeping. We had lot of layers, hand warmers, and kept the windows closed. I still woke up shivering at least once. There was lots of tossing and turning, but we actually managed to sleep, and in the tent (not the car) so I consider it a success. :)

This sunrise... quite a gorgeous thing to see right outside the tent door!

Breakfast... trying to warm our cold muffins and heat some coffee water! Quite rugged. ;)

Off for our first hike... Around the Hole-In-The-Wall rocks and into a deep canyon.

Look closely at the image below and you'll find the face of the old man of the canyon. :)

They have these convenient rings to help you climb out of this deep canyon. Fun! :)

A literal "hole in the wall"!

So many cacti... and lots of different kinds!

Back to camp, we inhaled some lunch and then took off in the Subie to see what else we could find!

A bit of pavement at the Kelso Depot train station, and some old buildings. Also, a bathroom. With lights. And running water. And soap! Fantastic. :)

Back to the wilderness...

These are big red hills from volcano activity from times long, long ago... and there are fields of lava rock around here. Suddenly, the flat desert terrain turns red then black.

There are air tubes out in these fields of lava, where the lava left literal tubes in the ground. You can climb down in them and look around, but we managed to forget flashlights, so we didn't get very far. Still, just more weird desert terrain that is fascinating.

Back home for the evening... time for more hot dogs and smores! Campfires are so fun. :)
